The Ornamental Garden

Divide clumps of herbaceous perennials, propagate by division if desired and recite the young clumps.
You can still get away with root cuttings on perennials such as Acanthus and Phlox.
Have a pot beauty and sort out session. Any plants in pots can be re-set or top dressed with compost or fertiliser mix.
Clear up any untidy beds, weed out and apply a good layer of mulch, this will help feed and condition the soil.
Plan your summer bedding scheme and make sure you have sufficient plants for the scheme ordered or that they are on this year’s list.
Houseplants and conservatory plants can do with a little attention. Thin out Jasmine, Passionflower and Plumbago. Spur prune back Bourgainvillea to 2.5cm from the main frame. Top dress all Citrus plants inside. Plant Begonia and Gloxinia tubers.
You can still move all deciduous trees and shrubs, but make sure the ground is not frozen or waterlogged.
Mulch and feed the base of all trees and shrubs, if you can get to the beach and you have checked with the parish halls there is still a lot of Vraic (seaweed) around. The folk who live next to Long Beach slipway at Gorey will love it if you remove that lot!

Lawns

You will probably need to mow this month, if so set the mower to it’s highest level.
If the ground is dry enough you can prepare the ground for sowing of grass seed.

The Fruit and Vegetable Garden

Net fruit and vegetable crops to keep the birds off from taking any young shoots.
Plant new fruit trees and bushes to get them established to fruit.
Prune autumn fruiting raspberry canes, such as Autumn Bliss. Prune back to the ground, the fertilise and apply a layer of mulch or well rotted horse manure and vraic.
Place cloches over any strawberry crops, it’ll bring on an early crop and stop the wind from nuking the leaves.
Harvest any winter crops that you may have left such as broccoli, sprouts, leeks, parsnip and swede.
Force rhubarb crowns before it comes into natural growth, the fresh pink growth is created in darkness, so use a rhubarb jar or a dust bin.
From the middle of February you can sow your tomato and cucumber plants, you will need a heated propagator. If you don’t have one then please call and we will sell you the vegetable and fruit seed as well.
Cultivate and prepare seed beds for your veg, you can warm up the soil by covering it with fleece, but this isn’t such an issue in Jersey.
If you are aiming on growing brassicas and then add lime to your soil because it helps deter Club root disease and Jersey is notoriously lime free. If you do this allow about 6-8 weeks before planting in the soil.
Plant Jerusalem Artichoke, garlic and shallots, and you can start peas but in a green house or undercover of a cloche.

Tidy up and sort your garden out generally, treat all wooden structures and furniture, you will be ahead for the year.
